iSchool Graduate Grading Guidelines

  3. iSchool Graduate Grading Guidelines

The iSchool courses receive either decimal grades or credit/no credit. Please consult the course catalog, time schedule or MyUW to learn the grading basis for any courses. Grading in undergraduate courses complies with the guidelines outlined in the UW Student Guide. Please review this section of the guide for more details. 

The iSchool has adopted its own criteria for grading graduate courses. The table below explains the criteria which may be applied within a course. Please consult the course syllabus for specific direction on how work will be assessed.

3.8 - 4.0
Exceptional work for a graduate student
Work at this level is consistently:
  • Creative, original, insightful
  • Thorough and methodologically sound
  • Well-reasoned and well-argued
  • Well-written and sophisticated in presentation

Work shows incisive understanding; and excellent recognition, evaluation and analysis of salient issues. Work demonstrates mastery and creative application of relevant technology, or sophisticated delivery of technological products.

3.4 - 3.7
Strong work for a graduate student
Work at this level is mostly:
  • Creative, original, insightful
  • Thorough and methodologically sound
  • Well-reasoned and well-argued
  • Well-written 

Work shows clear understanding; and accurate recognition, evaluation and analysis of salient issues. Work demonstrates competence and useful application of relevant technology, or effective delivery of technological products. 

3.1 - 3.3
Competent work for a graduate student
Work at this level is often:
  • Creative or original
  • Methodologically sound
  • Well-reasoned 
  • Adequately-written 

Work shows adequate understanding; and basic recognition, evaluation and analysis of salient issues. Work competence with relevant technology, or satisfactory delivery of technological products. A few errors, inconsistencies, or other problems may be present.

2.8 - 3.0
Acceptable work for a graduate student
Work at this level is generally:
  • Creative or original
  • Methodologically sound
  • Well-reasoned
  • Adequately-written

Work shows acceptable understanding; and some recognition or analysis of salient issues. Work demonstrates some competence with relevant technology. Errors, inconsistencies, or other problems are present. Work shows some flaws or difficulties.

2.7
Minimally passing work
Work at this level is occasionally:
  • Creative
  • Well-written 

Work shows some signs of understanding or limited analysis of salient issues. Work demonstrates some competence with relevant technology. Numerous errors, inconsistencies, or other problems are present. Work shows many weaknesses or difficulties.

2.6
Deficient work for a graduate student
Work at this level is inadequately developed, flawed by errors or inconsistencies and is lacking in:
  • Recognition or understanding of salient issues
  • Adequate reasoning or methodology
  • Support for arguments
  • Demonstration of basic skills
