Alexis Hiniker was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) Award of $175,000 for her research, “Designing, Implementing, and Evaluating Application Software for Meaningful Smartphone Use.” Congratulations, Alexis!
Bill Howe and Nic Weber were quoted in the Seattle Times article, Amazon’s role in co-sponsoring research on fairness in AI draws mixed reaction. Business reporter Benjamin Romano reported on Amazon’s partnership with the National Science Foundation (NSF) on a three-year, $20 million program to fund basic research into fairness in artificial intelligence systems.
Anna Lauren Hoffmann was quoted in the MIT Technology Review article, Hey Google, sorry you lost your ethics council, so we made one for you. In the article she is quoted as saying, “…the company should look inward and empower those already-marginalized employees ready to organize and stand in solidarity with vulnerable groups to tackle pervasive problems of transphobia, racism, xenophobia, and hate.”
Annie Searle attended the 12th Annual Third Point Risk Summit in Washington DC and spoke on a panel that discussed risk frameworks and risk appetite, along with Tammy Rambaldi, Director of Enterprise Risk at Johnson & Johnson, Jack Jones from the FAIR Institute, and Brenda Ferraro, Senior Director from Prevalent.

Jason Yip was invited to the UW Faculty Appreciation for Career Education & Training (FACET) Celebration Brunch. The invitation was based on UW Engineering student nominations of faculty members who have positively impacted their career and professional development.
