iSchool commemorates centennial with tree dedication

On April 20, a group of students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered at the future site of the Intellectual House on the UW campus to dedicate a western red cedar sapling in honor of Earth Day and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Information School.

The tree, which is the progeny of another large tree on campus, was chosen as a native species, representing longevity and partnership. A plaque commemorating the event hangs from the fence surrounding the tree and reads:

"Western Cedars are sacred trees to many Native people and are indigenous to the North West Coast. This cedar tree was planted to commemorate the '100 Years of Connecting People & Technology, 1911-2011' and in celebration of the forthcoming Intellectual House. This tree serves as a physical reminder of the Information School's partnership with, and responsibility to, Native peoples.

We look forward to another 100 years of working together to fulfill our mission to prepare leaders, to research the problems and opportunities of information, to design solutions to information challenges, and to make information work. April 20, 2012"
