iSchool Showcase
The iSchool Showcase is an annual June event where we celebrate the academic milestones of our iSchool students, e.g., capstones, research, and other learning that goes beyond courses. The night will begin with a welcome address by the Associate Dean for Academics, followed by four highlight sessions lasting 30 minutes each. Student Participation
Student participation is voluntary (subject to course requirements). In order to participate, students must opt in during winter quarter by completing a short form. When they opt in, students will indicate whether they want to be considered for a poster slot, indicate in-person or virtual, state the instructor(s) overseeing their work, and provide a short four- to five-sentence description of what they want to present that will be visible to attendees. A committee consisting of the Academics Council selects a subset roster of who gets poster slots, curating the highlights of the year, representing the most distinctive learning achievements across all of the students’ programs.
Students are eligible to opt in for any of the following milestones that will be reached by the time of the Showcase:
- Capstone projects, including research Capstones
- Participation in a research project with faculty
- Student leaders of an iSchool-affiliated RSO completing their term of service
- Participation in study abroad programs
- Service learning or directed fieldwork projects
- Completion of a portfolio
- Finishing a doctoral dissertation
There are two ways to participate:
- Networking - Students share their work in conversation through informal mingling.
- They can mingle with attendees, sharing work over food. Bring an optional information source for more context, such as a one-page handout, QR code, or other tangible form for distribution during networking to facilitate sharing. If online, there will be a space to gather for informal conversations with online attendees.
- Postering - Students prepare a poster or other visual aid, sharing their work during one of the scheduled highlight sessions.
- In-person attendees have a poster or demo on the exterior wall of the HUB Ballroom. All students who are invited to present can bring whatever visual aid they want, of any size that can fit on an easel, and will receive a $50 gift card to offset any production costs prior to the event.
- Online attendees can join one of eight Zoom presentation stations in the north pre-function area, talking with attendees. This room would be designated as a quiet space to enable conversations with poster presenters.
Awards:
All presenting students, whether networking or posters, are eligible for awards. Attendees determine the awards, submitting a short form with:
- The project number
- One of three categories of award: insightful, equitable, creative
- A brief statement of the rationale for their nomination
- The affiliation of the nominator (e.g., staff, current student, alumni, iAffiliate, guest, family member)
All that’s necessary to receive an award is three nominations from distinct audience members, and audience members can nominate as many times as they like. Awards are tallied in real-time and announced at the end of the evening by the Associate Dean for Academics. There is no limit on the number of recognized projects.
