Responsibility in AI Systems & Experiences (RAISE) to Host Ece Kamar
Please join the Responsibility in AI Systems & Experiences (RAISE) group at the University of Washington as we welcome Ece Kamar, who will present the talk, "In the Pursuit of Responsible AI: Developing AI Systems for People with People." See flier.

Abstract: Wide-spread adoption of AI systems in the real-world has brought to light concerns around biases hidden in these systems and reliability and safety risks. Addressing these concerns in real-world applications through tools, guidance and processes has paramount importance. This endeavor also introduces new research directions for our community. In this talk, I'll discuss why taking a human-centric view into the development and deployment of AI systems can help to overcome the shortcomings of AI systems and lead to better outcomes in the real-world. I'll share several directions of research we are pursuing towards effective human-AI partnership through combining the complementary strengths of human and machine reasoning.
Bio: Dr. Ece Kamar is a Partner Research Area Manager at Microsoft Research Redmond overseeing the research on Human-centered AI. Ece serves as the Technical Advisor of Microsoft's company-wide committee on AI, Ethics and Effects in Engineering and Research (AETHER). She is also an affiliate faculty at the University of Washington. Her research investigates research problems at the intersection of AI systems, people and our society; exploring how limitations of AI systems lead to concerns around biases, reliability and safety problems, investigating novel ways for AI systems to support people, and finally developing frameworks for human-AI teamwork for complementarity.
RAISE is a UW-wide group of students and faculty interested in the broad space of responsibility in AI, trustworthy machine learning, human-centered computing and data science. As part of this group, our mission is to engage in scholarly, educational, and outreach activities that lead to foundational research in these areas. https://www.raise.uw.edu.
