iSchool Research Symposium: Bernie Boscoe
"With Strings Attached: Reusing Open Data in Research"
Presented by Bernie Boscoe, postdoctoral scholar, UW Information School
Publicly available scientific data abounds in research repositories worldwide. However, the practice of reusing public, free-flowing information is not a given among scientists. For example, in the mature open science field of astronomy, data (and code) sharing norms among astronomers are complex and nuanced, even when data are seemingly in the public domain for the taking.
In this methods-focused talk, Dr. Boscoe will first show her original data collection methods and analysis in her dissertation work relating to astronomy data practices. She will then show how she revisited her astronomy project with a new theoretical framework, Contextual Integrity (CI). CI was gleaned from her current postdoctoral project (with Nic Weber) and allowed for the interpretation of her data in new ways. This talk is based on current work to be presented at iConference 2020 in Boras, Sweden (also nominated for a best short paper award).
