iWelcome events for all students

Sept. 11-12 (multiple times): iCareer Services Orientation

 

Sept. 11, 10-11 a.m. & 5-6 p.m.;
Sept. 12, 10-11 a.m. & 5-6 p.m.

Choose one session.

The mission of our Career Services team is to empower students to take ownership of their career journey! Come and meet with members of our team who are here to help you along the way. Learn about the resources available to you and what you can do now to better prepare for your career goals. Register for one of the four sessions and the respective facilitator of each session will send out the Zoom link. Zoom links will be sent the evening before the 10 a.m. sessions and the morning of the 5 p.m. sessions.

Sept. 16, 3-5 p.m.: iSchool Carnival

The iSchool Carnival celebrates the incoming Informatics, MLIS, MSIM, Museology, and Ph.D. students and invites them to connect with all that our iSchool community has to offer. Students will learn more about getting involved in the campus community, engaging with faculty, meeting Student Services staff, and discovering other opportunities to make the most of their time at the UW’s Information School.

Please note that photographs will be taken during this event for documentary and marketing purposes.

Sept. 16-23 (various sessions): CIRCLE's International Welcome Program

CIRCLE’s International Welcome Program (IWP) aims to integrate and welcome over 2,000 new international students each year as they transition to both the UW and the U.S. Throughout Dawg Daze and early autumn quarter (Sept. 16-23, Oct. 4), IWP will host a number of events for both new international undergraduate and graduate students. Please see website for dates and descriptions. Registration for events will be sent to all international students by mid-August.

Informatics Transfer Admits A&O, Part 3

Sept. 17, various times

We partner with First Year Programs to provide our new incoming Informatics students an introduction to the Information School and the UW community. During your A&O part 3, you will have the opportunity to meet with the Informatics advisors and learn more about iSchool and UW resources. Times and locations will vary. Please review your agenda provided by First Year Programs for specific location and time details. This event is for Informatics transfer admits only.

Informatics First Year Direct Admit A&O, Part 3

Sept. 18, 19 & 20, various times

We partner with First Year Programs to provide our new first-year Informatics students an introduction to the Information School and the UW community. During your A&O part 3, you will have the opportunity to meet with the Informatics advisors and learn more about iSchool and UW resources. Times and location will vary. Please review your agenda provided by First Year Programs for specific location and time details. This event is for Informatics first-year direct admits only.

Dawg Daze - INFO Welcome Direct-To-Major Kickoff

Sept. 24, Noon-2 p.m.

Start your journey as an Informatics student by meeting your peer mentor, enjoying some food, getting some free merch, and making some new Informatics friends. Join us for a welcoming afternoon of fun! The Informatics peer mentors are excited to meet their direct-to-major mentees, build great friendships, and share tips on navigating the UW and the iSchool. We look forward to seeing you there! This event is for Informatics direct-to-major admits only.

Master of Arts in Museology

 

Museology New Student Orientation

Day 1: Sept. 17, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Day 2: Sept. 18, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

All incoming Museology students are expected to attend the Sept. 17 and 18 orientation sessions. These sessions will be held in-person. In addition to getting to know each other and building community as a cohort, these sessions will cover critical information on the UW, the iSchool, and Museology-specific policies and procedures, expectations and resources. Museology students should consult the pre-orientation Canvas page for further details and email uwmuse@uw.edu with questions.

Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS)

 

MLIS New Student Orientation (Virtual)

Sept. 17, noon-5 p.m.

This one-day orientation will be online and is for students (regardless of program mode) who are unable to attend the in-person orientation. Sessions include student and faculty panels, opportunities to get to know one another, and faculty-led workshops to prepare you for the MLIS program.

MLIS New Student Orientation (In Person)

Sept. 18, noon-4 p.m.

Join the MLIS staff and faculty to get oriented to the program and connect with your incoming MLIS student cohort. The in-person orientation is open to both online and residential students, and it is recommended that residential students attend. Please look out for future communications with more details closer to the event.

Master of Science in Information Management (MSIM)

 

MSIM Online Autumn Orientation

Sept. 14, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Our online orientation welcomes the newest cohort of online MSIM students to the program. The primary focus is on creating community amongst your cohort, introducing our students to their support system, and providing useful information about the MSIM program and how to be successful in it!

MSIM Early-Career / Early-Career Accelerated New Student Orientation

Day 1: Sept. 17, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Day 2: Sept. 18, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

The two day-orientation for the EC/ECA students will provide a multitude of sessions and learning opportunities. This is a required orientation for all incoming students. Over the two days, we will cover topics such as what's unique about the MSIM program, degree and curriculum overview, student & alumni panels, skills workshops, and ample opportunities to get to meet and know the cohort.

MSIM Mid-Career New Student Orientation

Sept. 21, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Similar to the two-day orientation, this single-day orientation for our incoming MC students will cover a variety of topics and is required. During this orientation, we will be covering curriculum, degree planning, and who and what makes up the MSIM program, and we will provide more community-building opportunities.

Ph.D. in Information Science

 

Ph.D. New Student Orientation

Sept. 19, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

This one-day orientation will include a welcome from the chair, opportunities to get to know one another, an intro with the communications team, and the mandatory HR orientation. Students will end the day with an event held by the Doctoral Student Association (DSA) to meet fellow iSchool Ph.D.s. You'll also have the opportunity to have a professional photo taken.

Sept. 23, 3-4:30 p.m.: IUGA: Informatics First-Year Mixer

Come and meet your fellow Informatics recent admits to start the year off right! The Informatics Undergraduate Association (IUGA) at the UW iSchool is hosting a social mixer where you can have fun getting to know others in your cohort! We will open with a quick presentation about IUGA, other student groups and the iSchool, then devote the bulk of the time for activities and games with the people around you. There will also be a chance to network with IUGA officers and to win some free INFO swag and merch! We will also provide snacks! This event is geared toward all recent first-year Informatics admits (fall 2023 applicants and beyond).

Sept. 27, 2-3:30 p.m.: IUGA: "What is INFO?" with IUGA

Heard about the Informatics major but don’t know what it is? Come and learn directly from INFO student leaders and advisors with the Informatics Undergraduate Association! We will open with a presentation explaining the Informatics major and all its applications, and then have an open Q&A session. We will close with a chance to socialize with other potential INFO students and free time to network and chat with IUGA officers. Light snacks/refreshments will be provided. Students from all backgrounds (even current INFO students) are welcome to attend!
