FanCentral: A social media platform for sports fans that incentivizes interaction

Currently, there is no centralized social media platform for sports fans, or a way that teams can directly encourage fans to interact with their social media posts to further engagement. FanCentral is a social media platform for teams to share social media posts from various platforms to their fans. Teams can also reward fans for interacting with posts, incentivizing engagement. Fans are able to view detailed information and post history for their favorite teams and earn rewards by supporting their favorite teams.

Public Library Resources for Conscious Tech Use

My Capstone Project was concerned with information literacy among public library users, and produced educational and informational resources. These resources consisted of two public programs concerning the ways in which people navigate and share information online. The first provided an online security overview, focusing on how cookies and personal data are used by websites and social media, along with tools to protect their privacy. The second covered digital minimalism, helping attendees find and discuss ways to achieve a healthier balance in their online activities. Both programs were well received and have resulted in patrons taking control of their online behavior.

Refreshing Library Technology Curriculum Through Digital Storytelling and Instructional Design

Pasadena City College offers a Library Technology Certificate Program which prepares students for Library Paraprofessional positions in all types of libraries. Currently, the required coursework includes introductory classes to library services like reference, access, and technical services. As a former participant of this program, I saw an opportunity to design lesson plans and assignments within the courses offered that incorporate digital storytelling and instructional design concepts. The curricular content developed for this project will help students learn practical skills to design digital resources and apply strategies for storytelling that create personal connections, regardless of their role in a library.

RESTORE: Save Our Oceans

According to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, approximately "three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihood." Therefore, it is critical that we do our part to maintain the cleanliness of our oceans and lakes. Our solution is a gamified website aimed to raise public awareness of beach cleanups in order to combat the growing threat of pollution. Through our website, users have the opportunity to grow a community and obtain achievements for finding and attending local beach cleanups with their friends.

Safely connect and expand your social circles with video chat “Mingle” with trusted friends network

Since the onset of the global pandemic, we have lost the flexibility to meet friends, families, and colleagues in person. Therefore, we incubated an innovative web application, a drop-in video chat social network, to foster spontaneous connections with your friends and a 2nd-degree network that supports up to 12 people in the same room. Our service will improve the sense of belonging and provide a new venue for people to meet and connect.

StoryBond

Everyone is a book filled with their own life stories. How much do we actually know about them? StoryBond is a social media app that encourages people to share and exchange stories, and these stories have the power to turn acquaintances into friends. Our app is a place to know more about the people you have met through the exchange of stories. The story can be an idea, a personal anecdote, or an experience. StoryBond provides a way that helps people connect on a deeper level. Hopefully, our users can make true bonds through writing and exchanging stories.

Teen Meme Privacy Project

The Teen Meme Privacy Project set out to address particular ways in which privacy and surveillance impact youth, complicated by intersections of their sociopolitical identities. We committed to acknowledge the reality of systems of power in their lives – such as white supremacy, capitalism, and heteropatriarchy. By honestly and unequivocally engaging these within the context of their lived experiences, we worked with our Teen Advisory Board to create relevant, authentic, and impactful shareable material, and fill the need for a robust set of privacy resources made just for teens, on topics they care about, in language and formats they use.

Tracking Online Disinformation on Social Media

The advent of social media has led to users unable to distinguish between misleading and real information. To tackle this, we have developed an online disinformation mapping tool that extracts data from Twitter for any user-defined hashtag, classifies it as real or fake, and then visualizes the spread of misinformation for that topic. Our project is aimed to help journalists, political entities, and responsible citizens by raising awareness and promoting informed decision-making.

Tracking Users Across Parler and Twitter

The riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021, exemplify in dramatic fashion the potential for problematic online narratives to have offline consequences. More work is needed to better understand the impacts of mis/disinformation and its role in such events. Using case studies of users across Parler and Twitter, I found that definitions of acceptable conservativism are becoming more narrowly defined and that there is increasing narrative-based collaboration between international conservative groups. These are important discoveries that will increase researchers’ understandings of mis/disinformation and help align solutions designed to mitigate these problems.

Blyp

Blyp is a digital curation tool intended for those at end-of-life. People death plan in various ways--from cleaning social media profiles, to leaving predated emails for loved ones. Existing social media platforms focus on what is happening now, but not much on what happens after we pass. With Blyp, users can preserve memories through photo and text media, specify a location, and decide when loved ones can access their blyps. Blyp gives those close-to-death a platform to leave stories behind, while at the same time creating conversation around and de-stigmatizing death. Blyp is available as an iOS mobile application.
