Dr. Friedman interviewed on New Hampshire Public Radio

Friday, February 6

Professor Batya Friedman of the Information School gave an interview to New Hampshire Public Radio’s Word of Mouth on February 5th. In the interview, Dr. Friedman talks about her work with a project she started last fall, "Information for an International System of Justice: Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda." The project has so far conducted 49 in-depth interviews with the judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, administrators, interpreters, investigators, jailers, psychologist and others associated with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).

In her interview, Dr. Friedman explains why it was important to document the voices of those who worked in the ICTR, and how she plans to make the video interviews from that project freely available to the public to help artists, educators, and jurists in the future understand what happened at the tribunal through firsthand accounts. She also discusses the work of a team of UW researchers that uses digital "hash codes" to ensure that digital files such as those interviews can be verified as authentic by later users and generations. The work on hash codes, it is hoped, will ensure that the wealth of digital documents bearing witness to everything from presidential inaugurations to family vacations can be verified as an unaltered file.
