Related Programs & Non-Degree Options

Related master's programs

The Information School participates in multi-disciplinary degree programs in addition to its core master's programs. Additional information is provided on the Related Degrees Chart.

Master of Human-Computer Interaction & Design

The Master of Human-Computer Interaction and Design (MHCID), is offered jointly by four departments, Computer Science & Engineering, Human-Centered Design and Engineering, the Information School, and the Division of Design (School of Art).

This unique, cross-disciplinary program educates new generations of designers, engineers, and user researchers who successfully combine the creative aspects of design and the study of human behavior with the analytical techniques of engineering. Graduates of the MHCID program use their knowledge to create innovative products and technologies.

Graduates are prepared for a career of deep engagement with the theoretical and practical aspects of creating successful technology user experiences.

Master of Science in Data Science

The Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) program offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary curriculum, offered jointly by six departments in partnership with the eScience Institute. Applied Mathematics, Biostatistics, Computer Science & Engineering, Human-Centered Design and Engineering, the Information School, and Statistics. Combining practically focused and technically rigorous training in statistical modeling, machine learning, software engineering, data management, data visualization, and user interface design, the MSDS provides a powerful platform to advance in the data science field.

The program is designed with working professionals in mind, with classes held in the evenings. You can elect to take the program, consisting of nine courses, on a full- or part-time basis.

Professional development

Professional development and continuing education opportunities are a priority at the Information School. The Information School partners with UW Extension to provide a gateway for professional development and career advancement to offer the following options:

  • School Library Media Endorsement: Students interested in pursuing careers as teacher librarians must hold a teaching certificate and must acquire a Library Media Endorsement.
  • Classroom-based and online certificate programs via UW PCE: Programs for information professionals. This includes both classroom-based and online options.
  • Individual courses as a non-degree seeking student: Options and registration instructions for taking Master of Library and Information Science (LIS) courses and Master of Science in Information Management (IMT) courses via nonmatriculated or graduate nonmatriculated status.

Non-matriculated Vs. Graduate Non-matriculated Status

To take courses as a non-degree seeking student you must register as either a non-matriculated (NM) student or a graduate non-matriculated (GNM) student. The following definitions apply:

  • You should register as a non-matriculated student (NM) if you are NOT planning to apply the credits you earn toward a specific graduate-level (master's or Ph.D.) degree. Most people will fall into this category. There is no application process to have NM status.
  • You can apply to have graduate non-matriculated (GNM) status if you are planning to apply the credits you earn toward a specific graduate degree in the future. GNM status is an option for the MSIM and MLIS programs, but not Ph.D. Learn more about applying for GNM status.
