Biography

I come to this wonderful iSchool with a strong practitioner background and a research agenda on international youth literature as well as the depiction of characters in young adult novels marginalized because of health and disability issues. I was a children’s and young adult librarian for 13 years at Toronto Public Library before moving to Florida, where I continued my career with the public library systems in Miami and Tallahassee and became a naturalized US citizen. In 2009 I earned my PhD in Library and Information Studies from the Florida State University College of Communication and Information with Dr. Eliza Dresang as my major professor. I have a longstanding interest in children’s books from around the world. “The Looking Glass” (http://www.lib.latrobe.edu.au/ojs/index.php/tlg/index), a still-thriving international children’s literature e-journal that I helped found and edited from 1997-2002 in Toronto and Miami is now published in Australia. My dissertation, Found in Translation, employed two types of sense-making to explore decision making by US children’s book editors who acquire books from other countries for translation into English for the US market. My latest involvement on a project with an international focus is as lead editor of the fifth volume in the Bridges to Understanding reference series: Goldsmith, Heras, and Corapi, Reading the World’s Stories: An Annotated Bibliography of International Youth Literature. Two earlier research projects each consist of a content analysis and annotated bibliography: Gross, Goldsmith, and Carruth, HIV/AIDS in Young Adult Novels (Scarecrow, 2010); and Irwin, Goldsmith, and Applegate, Autism in Young Adult Novels (Rowman & Littlefield, 2015). My book award committee experience includes chairing the Mildred L. Batchelder Award (given to the publisher for excellence in children's book translation), serving on the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) Outstanding International Books committee, and sitting on the Katherine Schneider Family Book Award jury (for authentic depiction of disability experiences). Apart from academic work, I am the librarian for the Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel of Los Angeles and .proud grandmother of Hendrix (9), Rhys (7), and Juno (4) – book lovers all!
