Annie Searle, a lecturer at the University of Washington Information School, has released a new book, “Risk Reconsidered,” that takes a fresh look at columns she has written over the past several years on risk.

The book addresses dozens of risk-related topics, including the 2008 financial sector crisis, the 9/11 attacks, cyber risk, reputational risk, and operational risks from boards of directors. Searle republishes essays she has written over the years for Risk Universe magazine and for her firm’s newsletter and re-examines them through a 2018 lens.

"The book provides crucial lessons on how to avoid and manage risk,” said reviewer Sara Curran, director of the UW Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology. “As a non-expert with a social science background, I appreciated Searle's lessons on ethics and clear-eyed generalizations about best practices within complex institutional landscapes."

Searle is principal of Annie Searle & Associates LLC, a Seattle-based independent advisory and research firm focused on operational risk. At the iSchool, she teaches courses on operational risk to both undergraduates and graduate students, as well as a graduate level course on the impact of information management on ethics, policy and law and on the foundations of information management. In winter quarter, she will be offering a new course on emerging trends in cybersecurity.

“Risk Reconsidered,” published in July by Tautegory Press, is available at Amazon for $14.95.
