Informatics Add Code Policy

General Informatics Add Code Policy

Priority is given to students who are currently in the Informatics program.

Requesting an add code does not guarantee that you will receive an add code for the class. Submitting a request will put you on the wait list.

We generally do not overload a class or section.

We only distribute add codes if there are spots available in the class. Add codes will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis to students on the wait list. The higher you are on the wait list, the higher the chances.

The last day we will distribute add codes to students on the wait list is the last day of Period III Registration (last day of the first week of the quarter).

We do not maintain wait lists for INFO 101, 102, 200, or 201. Please sign up at NotifyUW to be alerted if a spot opens in the class.

Non-Informatics students can take a maximum of two (2) core Informatics courses. If you have already taken two (2) core courses, you will not be placed on the wait list for any core classes.

Students who no longer need the add code they received may not give away their add code to others. This is to ensure fairness to students on the wait list.

Due to an overwhelming demand for INFO courses, we will not be able to tell you where you are on the wait list.

Tip: Submit an add code request as soon as the Time Schedule for the next quarter is published.

Questions? Email informatics@uw.edu.

Add Code Request Form

Access the form here.

If you are a freshman or sophomore with more than 90 credits, request an add code here. Read more about INFO 101, 102, 200, 201.

Who can use this Add Code Request Form?

The add code request form is available to current Informatics students and non-Informatics students. Non-Informatics students include undergraduate students not in the major, graduate students, and non-matriculated students.

Disclaimer

If you don’t have the prerequisite for the class, make sure to forward permission from the instructor to informatics@uw.edu before submitting an add code request. Please know that permission to join the class does not guarantee an add code. It means that you have been given permission to join the class without the prerequisite. You will still need to request an add code and be on the wait list.

Visit this page for Information on the prerequisites.

If you've already taken two (2) core classes, you won't be placed on any of the wait lists. As a non-Informatics major, you're only allowed to take a maximum of two (2) from this list: INFO 340, INFO 343, INFO 360, INFO 380, INFO 450, INFO 470, INFO 481.

Registration for INFO 101, 102, 200, 201: We do not maintain wait lists for INFO 101, 102, 200, or 201 and other elective INFO courses. Please sign up at NotifyUW to be alerted if a spot opens in the class. If you are a freshman with more than 90 credits, see INFO 101, 102, 200, 201.

Students who want to retake INFO 200 or INFO 201 will be accommodated only if there are spots available in the class during Period III Registration. We want to prioritize students who have not yet taken these courses. If you plan to apply for Informatics and are concerned about how a low grade in either class will affect your application, please review Informatics Prerequisites or email iAsk@uw.edu

How to use the Add Code Request Form

  • You can submit an add code request for as many classes/sections as you wish. If you do not have a preference, submit an add code request for multiple labs or sections.
  • Make sure to press submit! Responses not submitted will not be recorded, and we do not have a way to track this data. If you did not submit your add code request, you will not be placed on the wait list nor will we have your information.
  • You will not receive a confirmation email immediately. Confirmation emails will be sent out beginning of Period II Registration. If you receive an email, it means you’re on the wait list.

Non-Matriculated, Tuition Waiver, ACCESS students: Please email informatics@uw.edu for questions regarding add code requests and registration.

Graduate students who register via Professional Continuing Education (PCE):

  • Core INFO Courses: Submit an add code request using the add code request form. You will be placed on the wait list for the class. If you receive an add code, contact PCE to register for the class with the add code. Please keep in mind that since INFO classes are undergraduate classes, priority will be given to undergrads.
  • Elective INFO Courses:
    1. You do not need to submit an add code request if you fulfill the prerequisites for the course.
      • Register for the class you wish to join. If the INFO class you wish to join is full, PCE will place you on “Standby” list.
      • You will not be charged tuition until you are successfully registered for the class.
    2. If you do not fulfill the prerequisite for the course:
      • Contact the faculty/instructor teaching the class for permission to join without it, then forward the email to informatics@uw.edu
      • If the class is not full, you may receive an add code for the class.
      • If the class is full, submit an add code request to be placed on the wait list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where’s my add code?

An add code request does not guarantee you will receive one, nor does it guarantee you a seat in the requested course/lab section. We only distribute add codes if there are spots available in the class.

Please look out for an emails beginning Period II Registration. Depending on where you are on the wait list, you may get an add code or an email update of when add codes were distributed.

Switching

We do not accommodate the requests to switch classes and/or sections due to the high demand for INFO classes and all sections have ongoing wait lists. Do request an add code for all sections that you wish to register for.

I requested an add code for one lab section, but any section works for me.

Please complete an add code request for all sections you are interested in, in order for you to be placed on the appropriate wait lists. If you only requested an add code for one (1) section, you are only on one (1) waitlist.

When I checked the UW Time Schedule and MyPlan, it still says there are spaces available for INFO XXX/Section XX. Why didn’t I receive an add code?

First, check the Enrollment Summary instead of the main Time Schedule page or MyPlan. MyPlan and the main Time Schedule page does not show you accurate enrollment status.

In the instance that the class is showing available seats but you still have not received an add code:

  • We already distributed available add codes to students
  • You requested an add code for a different section

The professor/TA says I can overload. Can I get an add code?

No. We generally do not overload the class. Requests by the professor/TA will be forwarded for approval to the iSchool Academics team.

Classes already started but I'm still waiting to hear back about add codes. What should I do?

If you don’t receive an add code by the first week of the quarter, then it is likely that you may not get an add code.
