Higher Education Resources for Underprivileged Students

High school students who come from underprivileged backgrounds have difficulty navigating the resources required to pursue higher education. Our solution helps students in the South Seattle area towards finding resources that are tailored to what they need for their own circumstance. From navigating the college process as a first-generation student, to learning more about the scholarships available for undocumented students—our website helps underprivileged students gain the knowledge and power to take action. We come from similar backgrounds as the students we want to help, our project aims to empower those students to take action towards high education. You’re not alone!

HireAssist.ML

The advent of Machine Learning has brought a cascade of new jobs into the engineering market. Although these positions are in high demand, they are not easy to fill, even as an engineer with a college degree. It takes an exceptionally strong fit to get hired with lack of industry experience. Through our Google Chrome extension, engineers will have a system within their web browser to facilitate and improve their online job search. The extension provides job recommendations based on a user's skills and the job opportunities they view. Additionally, the application process is streamlined by automatically filling out information.

Hoosier Dome Archive

The Hoosier Dome, an all ages DIY music venue in Indianapolis, Indiana, has hosted several generations of local musical talent since its inception in 2012, and has had a significant impact on the development of the Indianapolis music scene. Photos taken at the Hoosier Dome have been spread across various social media accounts, and as time has passed these photos are in danger of disappearing or becoming inaccessible. The Hoosier Dome archive is creating a space to store and create community access to these photos and to preserve Hoosier Dome history.

Husky Hub

Students are not able to afford food and vary their food choices through the current Housing and Food Services system. We wanted to mainly address the question: "How might Housing and Food Services in the University of Washington allocate finances, vendors, policy, and resources so that they can decrease the exploitation of student funds and improve student life by varying food choices through connecting with more partners?" Our Solution is Husky Hub, a web application focused on improving the student food service experience regardless of financial standing and building community through on campus resources and small business owners.

Impostor Blocker

96% of global cybercrime attacks can be attributed to phishing, yet there exists no viable solution to accurately fight phishing. These attacks cost the world $6 trillion annually, consequentially increasing brand erosion and reducing online channel adoption. We want to help enterprises counter phishing attacks to minimize financial losses and regain brand trust. Our solution is a detection algorithm that determines phishing activity. Through our unique use of computer vision to detect logos and related brand content, paired with HTML+URL classification, we provide clients with accurate and reliable detection scores. Doing so empowers them to secure their online presence.

Improving Information Architecture for Starbucks Beverage Recipe Cards

As Starbucks increases its drink lineup, with currently over 90 beverages, beverage recipe cards have become increasingly important learning and reference materials. We worked with Starbucks stakeholders and baristas to explore how beverage recipe cards are used across physical and digital platforms. We created information architecture and standardization recommendations, metadata, content models, and dictionaries to steer recipe card sharing and development. By standardizing the content and organization of recipe cards, we improve the barista learning experience and move towards making beverage recipe and preparation information interoperable data resources to empower other business activities, such as supply ordering and efficiency studies.

Improving Trust & Interoperability: Metadata for Data Refuge's Open Data Catalog

The Data Refuge Data Catalog archives federal climate and environmental data. It provides historical snapshots of datasets released on government data portals, which are vulnerable to deletion. Yet the metadata associated with these Data Refuge records have been minimal, and their relationship with the source records have not been clearly defined. To address this, we investigated crosswalking solutions, improved metadata of target datasets, customized an extensible schema, standardized tagging with controlled vocabulary, and documented workflow for future-phase implementation. The results improve trustworthiness and interoperability, facilitate more seamless data discovery and retrieval, and meet the needs of both archivists and researchers.

Increasing Access to the Grant Haller Photograph Collection

UW Special Collections received a collection from deceased Seattle-area photojournalist Grant Haller in 2018. The collection has high anticipated research value because it documents many instances of activism lead by a variety of underrepresented groups, and fills in coverage gaps of modern photographers at Special Collections. However, very little was known about the condition, specific contents, and preservation needs of the material until this project began, and there was low institutional and public knowledge of the collection’s existence. This project combines several archival competencies—including processing, researching, arranging, preserving, and outreach—to help increase knowledge and future use of the photographs.

Information Architecture & Web Migration for ACRL ESS

The new European Studies Section (ESS) is an integration of the Slavic & Eastern European Section (SEES) and the Western European Section (WESS) of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL - a division of the American Library Association). ESS will be hosted on a new Wordpress site giving a chance for an intentional design based on user research and content analysis. This site is serving academics and professionals in European affairs and history, while also supporting study and research. This project serves to meet this purpose by creating a website that is inclusive of the WESS and SEES.

Information Framework Development for The Nature Conservancy - Oregon Office

The Oregon Chapter of The Nature Conservancy has an overwhelming amount of data. There are few standards for data management and lack of best practices. This has led to data being haphazardly stored across both cloud storage and local storage. Our solution to standardize data practices and encourage the use of cloud storage will improve data flow and organization. The goal is to improve how data is shared throughout the chapter, and cut down on the time it takes for members to find what they’re looking for, thereby increasing productivity chapter-wide.
