Informatics Student Handbook – Welcome!

Welcome to the Informatics program!

We are very pleased you have decided to become an Informatics major.

First launched in autumn 2000, the Informatics program has become one of the most sought-after degrees on the UW campus for those interested in information, technology, and people.

Informatics majors have a unique opportunity to pursue a user-centered study of information systems and technology. Critical problems that face business, government, and society sit at the center of the Informatics domain.

As an Informatics student you will develop a conceptual understanding of the interaction between information, people, and technology as well as a range of technical skills. More importantly, you will take a human-centered perspective when designing and implementing systems that solve real world problems.

Information and technology play critical roles in our economy. They also play critical roles in cultural, professional, and personal contexts as we live in an information society where success is directly related to information and technology literacy. As a result, opportunities abound for well-educated information professionals.

At the Information School you will find talented and dedicated faculty, outstanding technology facilities, and a supportive staff. The faculty, staff, and student community you join is committed to your success and strives to provide a world-class education that will help you meet your goals.

The rest is up to you. We expect you to work hard, to study hard, and to become an active participant in the iSchool community. If you do those things, success is certain to follow.

Welcome to the Information School of the University of Washington!
