Position Description

The Information School is currently searching for a student system administrator.  Working closely with other members of the iSchool IT team and a full-time system administrator, the student assistant will be responsible for:

•    System administration of servers that support research and instructional projects; including server setup, configuration, OS installation and maintenance
•    Responding to end-user requests
•    Ensuring reliability and security of systems
•    Installing security updates
•    Performing system backups and monitoring system performance
•    Documenting processes and procedures
•    Advising on hardware and software purchases
•    Evaluating and testing new technologies, processes,  and procedures
•    Ensuring system compatibility with UW and iSchool systems.
•    Handling sensitive/private data
•    Providing limited 2nd tier Help Desk support

The ideal candidate will be available through the entire 2010/2011 academic year. The workload will be 15 to 20 hours per week.   

Requirements
The successful candidate must have the following:
  • Operating System Administration:  Familiarity with at least 2 of the following: Linux, Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and/or Windows Server 2008
  • Linux/MS Windows integration, particularly with Active Directory a plus.
Desired Qualifications (some combination of the following): 
  • System Administration: User/Group management, ACLs, Kerberos, LDAP and Scripting
  • Web server: Apache, IIS, Tomcat
  • Database: PostgreSQL, MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server
  • Programming: PHP, Perl or Python preferred
  • Email: Familiarity with email (MTA/SMTP) concepts

This position is open to ALL current University of Washington students enrolled as of autumn quarter 2010.

Salary:
$16.00 - $18.50/hr DOE

This position is not benefits eligible.
