Biography

I am a 2011-2012 Fulbright Fellow to Canada, the 2012 recipient of the University of Washington Graduate School Medal, and a 2010 Google US Anita Borg Memorial Scholar. I am a PhD Candidate in Information Science at the University of Washington and an affiliated graduate student in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, Canadian Studies Center. Additionally, I am a 2008 alumna of the Executive Master of Science in Information Management program at the Information School. My primary research investigates the role of information systems and technologies in the lives of homeless young people. My supervisor in this work is Associate Professor David G. Hendry. I am also the project lead for Friends of Homeless Young People, a community-based group. Our current project is “Music is my life” - a show of art work by homeless young people. The art work consists of drawings and stories by 129 homeless young people, aged 15-25. These drawings and stories are about musical devices which might help homeless young people and were created between February-August 2012. Homeless young people requested that their drawings and stories be included in a public art show. The show will take place from May – August 2013 at Molly’s Café at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington. You can find out more about the Music is my life project at www.facebook.com/MusicIsMyLifeProject.
