NM Registration and GNM Application Procedures

Registering for NM status:

To register for courses as a Non-Matriculated (NM) student go to the UW Extension website.

Applying for GNM status:

Before you can register for courses as a Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) student you must apply for GNM status from the UW Graduate School.  This includes students accepted to the MSIM program for the fall, but want to take summer courses that will apply towards their degree.  Please note:  GNM applications don't require submission of the GRE or GMAT, we only need your application form, personal statement, transcripts, and resume/CV.  This will allow you to take courses while preparing to take the GRE or GMAT. GNM status is not available to persons holding an F-1, F2, or Visitors visa, or to those expecting the Office of Graduate Admissions to issue the I-20 student visa application for F-1-status entry into the U.S.  The application is on the Graduate School website (click on "create a new applicant profile" in the New Applicants-Start Here box).

The deadline dates for submitting applications to the Graduate Admissions Office are:

  • Autumn Quarter: September 1
  • Winter Quarter: December 1
  • Spring Quarter: March 1
  • Summer Quarter: May 15

Late applications are not accepted.  You must be classified in GNM status by the start of the quarter to have the credits earned that quarter count towards a future graduate degree.   You are also not allowed to retroactively request GNM status after the quarter has started and/or after you have completed courses.

To apply for GNM status, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to create account on the Graduate School online application page.
  2. Select either ‘Information Management (Day)’ for IMT day courses or ‘Information Management (Exec)’ for IMT Exec courses. Select ‘Information School’ for LIS courses ONLY if you are in the School Library Professional Certificate Program.
  3. Fill in the on-line application form.
  4. Complete the on-line process by clicking on the submit button at the bottom of the page.
  5. Once confirmation that the application was submitted is received, print a final copy of the application.
  6. Mail a copy of your official transcripts to The Information School:

Statement of Purpose

As a part of your application, you will be asked to submit a statement of purpose in which you outline your reasons for applying for GNM status and how these relate to your educational and professional goals. This statement (up to one page) may also include experience and skills you would bring to the degree program, your special interests and abilities, and your tentative goals for a professional career.

Applicants will be informed via email of the admission decision shortly after receipt of online application, transcripts and statement of purpose.

Once you are approved to take GNM courses in the Information School visit UW Extension for further instructions on how to register for courses as a GNM student.
