Non-Matriculated Options for LIS Courses
Individuals may register in certain Information School Library and Information Science (LIS) graduate courses as a non-matriculated student (on a space-available basis) providing you receive instructor permission. (View
UW Academic Calendar.)
The following guidelines apply:
- Non-matriculated students are eligible to take approved residential (on-campus) LIS electives on a space-available basis.
- Core courses (courses typically ending in 0) are not available for non-matriculated enrollment. Note that some courses may be closed at the discretion of instructor or school.
- Online LIS courses are not available for non-matriculated enrollment.
- Non-matriculated students are eligible for standby registration status; students are not officially registered until the 3rd day of the quarter.
Non-Matriculated (NM) status
If you plan on taking courses as a non-matriculated student please follow the above guidelines and register via UW Extension.
Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) status
Graduate non-matriculated status is only an option if you are enrolled in the School Library Professional Certificate Program*. If you are not enrolled in this certificate program, your only option is non-matriculated enrollment.
Applying to the MLIS degree
If you are planning on applying to the MLIS degree program in the future, note that you will not be able to apply credits earned as a non-matriculated student towards a future MLIS degree.
*If you are in the School Library Professional Certificate Program a maximum of eighteen (18) credits earned as a graduate non-matriculated student may be considered for transfer toward the MLIS degree, should you subsequently apply for and be accepted into the MLIS program.
If you have any questions about non-matriculated options, please contact the MLIS program, at mlis@washington.edu or 206-543-1794.
