Internship Site/Experience

There are three primary criteria that a setting or experience must meet in order to qualify as an MSIM internship:

  • The internship site/experience must be approved by the MSIM Academic Advisor (or IMT 590 Faculty Coordinator) as meeting minimum standards for the scope of an MSIM internship experience.  Students should always confer with the MSIM Academic Advisor before contacting a potential internship site or supervisor. The MSIM Academic Advisor will assist the student in making initial contact with possible host sites.  It is the responsibility of Day MSIM students to contact the MSIM Academic Advisor a minimum of 1 quarter before they plan to begin their internship.  Refer to Internship Process for a detailed summary of how to set up an internship.
  • The student’s work/ projects/ tasks must be primarily of a professional or beginning professional nature.
  • The internship must constitute a learning experience for the student that relates to the academic scope of the MSIM program.

Types of internship positions

MSIM students offer information-intensive organizations a range of practical knowledge and skills that can help solve information problems. Our students are grounded in a human-centered approach to information, with a solid base in management and technology. Using innovative practices in analysis and design, our students can ensure that an organization’s information systems meet the needs of its staff, customers and partners. Each student is mentored by one of our faculty members during their internship who guides their work by fusing theoretical knowledge with practical applications. MSIM interns, in the vanguard of the information technology field, are committed to applying their knowledge to the organization’s needs. Whether it’s redesign of a web-site, taxonomy construction, information security analysis, database modeling, information retrieval system design, requirements analysis for large information projects, or any information intensive need, our students are a valuable resource. MSIM internships may be paid or unpaid. The learning aspects of the experience --not whether or not the position is paid -- are the primary concern of the School. The student is responsible for any travel arrangements and living expenses while enrolled in IMT 590.
