Tips for Tuition-Exempt Students

Following are some important tips for tuition-exempt students:

  • Most tuition-exempt MLIS students register for day courses, although the online mode may be a convenient option.
  • During Autumn quarter, space is restricted to incoming MLIS students only.
  • UW employees register on the third day of the quarter while other State of Washington employees register on the fourth day (per administrative policy statement 22.1).
  • Registration is on a space-available basis; classes could fill before you register. Please do not request instructors to reserve spaces or overload courses.
  • Since tuition-exempt students cannot register until the third or fourth day of the quarter, we suggest that you send an e-mail to the professor of the courses you intend to register for, alerting them of your intention to enroll if space is available. As a result, the professor may elect to add you to the class list and email listserve, which is helpful if there is required reading before class begins.
  • You may opt not to use your tuition-exemption on a quarter-by-quarter basis, if you wish to register with a higher priority standing. Learn more about options.
  • Tuition-exemption covers the maximum cost of 6 credits per quarter (part-time attendance). If you take 7 or more credits, you will be responsible for the additional tuition charges.
  • LIS 600 and LIS 700 are not eligible for the UW Tuition Exemption Program.
  • Tuition-exempt students usually take 1–2 classes per quarter (based on the 6 credits covered by the tuition-exemption program). On average, tuition-exempt students complete the MLIS program in approximately 2–3 years.
  • Since you will be pursuing a slightly different degree plan than the full-time MLIS students, it is very important for you to meet regularly with your faculty advisor when planning your course of study to ensure timely completion of all the degree requirements.
