MLIS: Online application process
MyGrad Online Application
The online application process begins by asking you to specify a login ID and password. Note: Please retain your login ID and password for future use. You will need them in order to:
- Save a partially completed application.
- Continue or edit your application later. You may continue editing your application until you pay the application fee.
- Once you have submitted your application by paying the fee, you will be able to check online the receipt status of your other application materials.
For Graduate Program, select Information School – Master of Library & Information Science. (If you are applying for the Law Librarianship program please select Master of Library & Information Science (Law Librarianship). You may edit your application until you pay the required application fee. Once you have paid the fee, you will be unable to make further changes to your application with the exception of the letters of recommendation component of the application.
After submitting the online application you will be able to log back in to check the receipt status of your additional application materials (transcripts and test scores).
Application fee and Fee Waiver
The application fee is $75 USD, payable online by debit or credit card. Qualified applicants can request a fee waiver from the Graduate School on the “Pay fee and Submit application” section of the MyGrad application. Please note: all application fee waiver requests must be submitted online through the MyGrad application. The iSchool is not able to waive the application fee.
Check Receipt Status of Other Application Materials Online
Once the fee has been paid and the application has been submitted, applicants can log back on to the MyGrad site and check the status of their application and review which materials have been received. Application materials are not processed (matched up with the application) until the application is submitted online. After the application is submitted, it normally takes a few days to process and upload any materials that have been received. Therefore, the earlier you submit your online application, the sooner your transcripts can be uploaded and the sooner you’ll be able to review your status online.

(Once you sign in click on the “Update” button under the “Action” column you’ll be taken to another screen which lists all the materials that are required and indicates whether or not they have been received.)
Application Timeline
The application deadline is February 1, 2011. The MyGrad application will close at midnight on February 1. Applicants who have not submitted their MyGrad application by midnight on February 1 will not be eligible for admission to the program.
We always encourage applicants to submit their application and materials as early as possible. While we do not give preference to applicants who apply early, doing so will enable applicants to ensure that all required materials are submitted by the deadline.
Applicants who choose to submit their online application within 1 week of the deadline will experience much longer processing times.
Reapplication Procedures
It is very common for applicants to apply to the MLIS program more than once. If you submitted an application for 2010 and plan to reapply for 2011, the application process is a little different. Applicants applying for a second time will need to submit a completed MyGrad application (personal statement, supplemental question responses and resume/cv). In this regard, you are just like any other first time applicant. However, we keep all application materials from the previous year, so we will still have your transcripts and test scores on file and can reuse them with your new application. (We are able to reuse your recommendations, however, the MLIS admissions committee prefers to see updated references for each application cycle.) Shortly after you submit your 2011 MyGrad application, send an email to mlis@uw.edu to notify our office that you are reapplying and request that your previous materials be used. (Transcripts will only need to be updated if you have taken additional coursework since applying to the program the previous year.)
Applying to the program multiple times does not increase or decrease your chances of being admitted. Each application cycle is a fresh start.
Note: Application materials are only kept for one year. Therefore, if you previously applied to an application cycle before 2010, your materials are no longer on file with our office. This is in conjunction with UW Records Retention regulations.
If you have questions about the application process, please contact the Information School’s Office of Student and Academic Services (OSAS) by e-mail at mlis@washington.edu or by phone at 206-543-1794.
