Portfolio Approval Process

Your portfolio will be approved by two readers in succession: your faculty advisor first and then a second faculty reader, chosen at random. Once your portfolio is ready for consideration, fill out Part I of the MLIS Portfolio Submission form. Submit the form with your portfolio to your faculty advisor by e-mail, mail, or in person.

After receipt of your portfolio and submission form, your faculty advisor will read and evaluate your portfolio. Further improvements or revisions may be requested, or it may be approved. This process continue as many times as necessary, but you must receive your advisor’s approval by the date shown below in order for you to graduate in that particular quarter. If your portfolio is mostly complete except for a project in progress, your advisor may, at his or her discretion, pass it provisionally pending satisfactory completion of the project in question.

When your advisor has approved the portfolio, he or she will sign Part II of the MLIS Portfolio Submission form. Either you or your faculty advisor may submit the signed form with the physical portfolio or with the URL for an online portfolio, to OSAS staff, who will then forward it to the second reader. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that both the form and the portfolio have been received by OSAS on or before the posted deadline shown below.

Upon reviewing the portfolio, the second reader will submit their evaluation to OSAS, with a decision of either

  • Pass,
  • Pass with minor revisions (which your faculty advisor will certify), or
  • Requires major revisions (which both faculty will certify).

If the portfolio requires revisions and the revisions are not accepted by the final due date for the quarter, the portfolio and all faculty evaluations will be submitted to the Chair of Library and Information Science, who will take action in consultation with the Associate Dean for Academics.
