MLIS Degree Capstone Overview
The MLIS Degree Capstone is one of the four options for MLIS students to complete their Culminating Experience requirement for degree completion. Capstone is an integrative experience in which students bring together much of the knowledge and skills they have acquired while in the MLIS program. Students may work individually or in a defined group, and the capstone experience is student-directed, meaning that students take responsibility for identifying and defining a problem to work on, developing the approach and methods needed to address the problem, carrying out the investigation, and presenting findings in both oral and written forms. During the Capstone the student engages with a client to consult on and design a solution to an information need; this client may be a current place of employment, a past fieldwork host site, etc.
The elements of the MLIS Degree Capstone are as follows:
- 5 credit hours
- Two-course sequence; offered every winter and spring
- Winter quarter = INFX 595: Capstone - Project Planning (2 credits)
- Spring quarter = INFX 596: Capstone - Project Implementation (3 credits, prerequisite: INFX 595)
- Instructor of record serves as a project manager.
The MLIS Degree Capstone option launches in winter 2011. More information will be provided on this website prior to this time.
