Apply to the MLIS Program

The next application cycle will admit students for Fall 2013. (Admission is for fall quarter only.) The MLIS application is updated annually and opens on September 1st. To be considered for admission, applicants must complete and submit the UW Graduate School online application through MyGrad. We encourage prospective applicants from diverse backgrounds and professional experiences to apply.

Application Deadline for Autumn 2013:

MLIS Residential/Online/Law

All applicants (domestic and international) will use the same deadline

* Applicants who wish to be considered for merit-based scholarships issued by the Information School must submit their MyGrad application by 11:59 pm (PST) January 20, 2013. (For scholarship consideration, the application does not need to be complete on January 20th, it just needs to be submitted.) The admissions committee will continue to accept applications and materials until February 1, 2013. The MyGrad application will close at 11:59pm (PST) on February 1, 2013. All application materials should be submitted by this deadline. Review and/or consideration of incomplete applications or late materials is at the discretion of the MLIS admissions committee.

Application Requirements

All applicants to the MLIS program must meet the following basic requirements:
  • Bachelors degree* or higher in any discipline (must be equivalent to a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution)
  • Grade point average of 3.0 or higher (exceptions considered on a case by case basis)
  • Applicants to the Law MLIS program must have earned a JD from a law school within the United States
*In order to be eligible to apply for Fall 2012, applicants must have earned their bachelor's degree by the end of Summer 2012. Applicants do not have to have earn their bachelor's degree prior to applying for the program.

**Submitting GRE scores is not required. However, if GRE scores are reported to the University of Washington, they may be reviewed and considered during the admissions process.

Law MLIS Applicants

When applying to the Law MLIS program, applicants should select Master of Library & Information Science (Law Librarianship) in the “Select your graduate program” section on the “Program Information” page. Please note, the Law Librarianship MLIS application is separate from the Residential/Online MLIS application. Law MLIS applicants should take care to select the correct degree designation when filling out the application.

Law MLIS applicants are required to submit an official copy of their LSAT score sheet. Please review the “Additional Application materials” section for instructions.

International Applicants

An international applicant is defined as any person who is not a U.S. citizen and is not a US Permanent Resident, and requires a visa to be in the United States. This includes individuals who have visas with the designation F1, J1, H4 etc.

There are no separate application requirements or procedures for International applicants. These individuals will follow the same application process and will submit the same materials as all other applicants. (English language proficiency is not based on residency.)

Non-native English speakers should review the requirements on the Additional application materials page and the UW English Language proficiency requirements in UW Grad School Memo 8.

International applicants admitted to the program may be required to provide financial ability documentation. Information about these requirements is included in the link, however, these materials are not required as part of the application process. (Applicants are asked to refrain from sending these materials until instructed to do so.)

Additional resources for international applicants are available on the UW Graduate School site, please review the Application Materials section of their website. International applicants will only be required to submit materials to the UW Graduate Admissions Office if they are recommended for admission to the program.

International applicants to the Online MLIS program are not required to have F-1 (student) visas. However international students must be able to travel to Seattle for the 4-day Online MLIS Orientation Week in late September during their first year in the program.

Financial Aid

All applicants* are strongly encouraged to apply for financial aid by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The University of Washington has a priority FAFSA deadline of February 28, 2012. Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to submit the FAFSA by this date.

Question about financial aid or the FAFSA should be directed to the UW Financial Aid Office.

*International applicants are not eligible to submit the FAFSA. However, international students are available for some scholarships.

UW Graduate School Resources

The UW Graduate School is the governing body that oversees graduate admissions at the University of Washington. For the purposes of applying to a graduate program, applicants do not need to send any materials to the UW Graduate School. However, applicants admitted to the program may be required to submit additional materials. For more information, please refer to the UW Graduate School's Admissions page.

Most, if not all, application materials are submitted online (MyGrad) or electronically (official test scores). However, if it is necessary to mail materials to the Information School, please use the following address:
