Subject: [iFac] Lewis Hall feedback

Hi Folks

As you know, over the summer the Lewis Hall Building Committee will be continuing its work on the design of our building. I will be providing updates by email as we move forward these next few months. When you receive these updates, I would like to encourage you all to communicate with me any concerns, issues or needs that you have and would like considered by the committee. We are meeting every two weeks or so across the summer so work will be progressing.

As I have indicated on several occasions our planning to date has been driven by considerations of community, equity, collaboration, and preferred work styles. We developed these principles based upon two facilities surveys that you and our students responded to in the past two years, the work of the Lewis Hall pre-design committee and multiple individual conversations. Our emphasis will be on the design of spaces that might be appropriated for multiple purposes–for opportunistic or planned collaborative activity where faculty, staff and students can work together –spaces that reflect the iSchool's value of community (school of one).

The design principles for faculty offices are:

  1. Equitable size and quality
  2. Access to natural light (window)
  3. Space for private conversations with a student advisee, faculty colleague or collaborator
  4. Suitable for solo work (thinking, reflection, creativity, scholarship and writing)

You should also note that the Lewis Hall is being designed with a focus on interaction between and among our faculty, staff and students. This includes a large Commons area and multiple collaborative break-out spaces available throughout the facility. These breakout spaces are planned to be along circulation paths and near enclosed offices to inspire spontaneous and convenient collaborations between 2-4 people.

I know that you are all setting out on your various summer activities but wanted to ask you to touch base with me now if you have any additional considerations that you would like the Committee to be aware of during this design phase specifically in relation to the planning for faculty office and collaborative spaces.

H
