Lewis Hall

Lewis Hall was constructed in 1899 as a dormitory and is one of the oldest buildings on the Seattle campus. It is a part of the University's 'Restore the Core' program of major building renovations. By relocating the iSchool, the program will be able to physically express its identity as a separate School as well as move into a space that has been specifically designed to meet the needs of its program for a highly collaborative culture that fosters collegiality, inclusiveness, creativity, and innovation.UW Capital Projects Overview: Lewis Hall.

Lewis Hall Move Planned for iSchool Centennial

After its founding in 1911, the Library School spent most of its history in the basement of Suzzallo Library. The newly named Information School moved to Mary Gates Hall in 2001, which it has shared with six campus units. Lewis Hall will be the iSchool's first building of its own. Learn more about the history of the iSchool and the history of Lewis Hall.

Renovation Plans

Plans for the renovation include building a modern addition that connects the leading-edge iSchool with its historic past as the Library School. Learn more about the renovation plans.

Sustainable Building

The State Legislature mandated that the renovation meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification requirements. Learn more about LEED certification, sustainability, and green building.

Landscaping

The Lewis Hall grounds and surrounding area abound with mature trees and shrubs. The Madrona tree to the southeast of the building will shelter an outdoor Gathering Space. Learn more about Lewis Hall landscaping.
