Lower-Division Courses

These courses are taken during the first two years of college. Transfer students and current UW students must complete these courses before applying to the Informatics program or the prerequisites must be in progress during Spring quarter at the time of application. To receive a timely admission decision, students taking comparable courses outside the University of Washington should submit up-to-date grade reports or transcripts as soon as they become available.

Required Courses

• INFO 100 Fluency in Information Technology (5 credits)*  
• CSE 142 Computer Programming for Engineers and Scientists I (4 credits)
• INFO 200 Intellectual Foundations of Informatics (5 credits)  
• Choose ONE course from the University list of English Composition courses
• Choose ONE of the following two courses:
  
  • STAT 311 Elements of Statistical Methods (5 credits)
  • QMETH 201 Introduction to Statistical Methods (4 credits)

*Students with a previous technology background can request INF0 100 be waived. If INF0 100 is waived, students must take an additional (5) elective credits in the major.

Recommended Courses

In addition to the above requirements, the following courses are recommended for completion before applying to the program.

• Courses that develop strong written and oral communication skills
• A minimum of two courses that provide exposure to a variety of social science fields such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, or philosophy
• CSE 143 Computer Programming for Engineers and Scientists II (4 credits). Note: CSE 143 is an Informatics Core requirement.
