Networking

Networking is a proven and effective way to establish the contacts you will need to advance your career. Contacts are people willing to offer information and advice about the fields and industries in which you want to work. Sometimes they are established professionals working in an area you are interested in. Just as likely they are your colleagues from school and work who know your skills and talents well. Often the leads you get from your contacts can lead to interviews — and ultimately jobs.

Some of the relationships you develop while at the iSchool will be a result of internships or other professional experiences. However, the effective networker also can build their contacts through membership and participation in professional associations and through the other relationships we cultivate every day with people with whom we share some interest.

Increasingly, sites like LinkedIn, Ecademy, and even Facebook are used to build professional networks and contacts. There are many resources available in print and on the Web to help you network more effectively through social and professional networking sites like these.
