Completing the Major

Once students have been admitted to the major, they typically follow the steps below to complete their degree:

1. Attend Informatics New Student Orientation (summer) for orientation to the major and fill out change-of-major paperwork.
2. Take junior level core courses (CSE 143, CSE 373, INFO 330, INFO 340, INFO 343, INFO 360, INFO 380 and INFO 481)
3. Recommended: begin applying for internships in late autumn quarter
4. Declare your major option in spring of junior year
5. Begin taking major electives/degree option classes spring of junior year
6. Recommended: complete a summer internship
7. Take senior level core courses (INFO 450, INFO 470, INFO 490)
8. Apply to graduate in autumn of senior year
9. Propose Capstone in October
10. Complete Capstone Class and present at spring Capstone event
11. Sign up for graduation ceremonies (iSchool Convocation and UW Commencement) and order graduation materials

Once these steps are completed you will have fulfilled all the requirements to graduate.

How long?

Most students take two years to complete the major once they are accepted and begin taking classes in the fall. Some students however elect to study abroad, take additional time to complete an internship, or spend additional time at UW completing a dual-major thus stretching their time in the program by an additional year.
