The Informatics major brings together expertise in a number of fields including (most centrally) information science and computer science, as well as management, law, philosophy and sociology. The major’s focus on interdisciplinarity is an important factor in graduates’ ability to thrive in such a large range of professional roles and settings — Informatics alumni possess an uncanny ability to design, build, manage and secure the resources all organizations need to thrive and innovate.

By embracing interdisciplinarity, the UW iSchool is able to think expansively about information problems that cut across multiple fields and professions. The flexibility of this approach is reflected in instruction, research and scholarship at the iSchool. We are home to more than 20 research projects, funded by both the public and private sectors, and five centers and institutes. Core areas of expertise include:

  • Access to Information
  • Ethics and Information Policy
